I’m at it again. More poetry. I think Jacob is having fun with this composition unit, but I’m having more fun.
Today’s lesson was on refrain and repetition. He learned about refrains in his music class, so we talked a bit about some refrains in some of the songs he knows. The lesson then instructed us him to write a poem using repetition. He was given three choices: Once,…but now…; When (something happens), I…; or I like…because….
We He chose the third one. I made my list of likes and whys while he made his. Then we categorized them, chose our favorite examples, and wrote our poems. His poem focused on his favorite toys. Here’s what I came up with:
I like rain because it’s relaxing.
I like blankets because they’re cozy.
I like naps because they’re restful.
I like cats because
They’ll curl up on your blanket
On a rainy day
And take a nap with you.
I wanted the things I chose to line up a certain way, but when I restated them at the end, they didn’t sound right in that order. I tried reordering the beginning to fit the end, but it didn’t sound right either, so I left it as it was.
I wonder what we’ll he’ll have for his next poetry assignment…
